Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ActuaryPractice, our study materials, and actuarial exam preparation.

What exams does ActuaryPractice cover?

ActuaryPractice covers all seven preliminary actuarial exams: Exam P (Probability), Exam FM (Financial Mathematics), Exam SRM (Statistics for Risk Modeling), Exam STAM (Short-Term Actuarial Mathematics), Exam LTAM (Long-Term Actuarial Mathematics), Exam MAS-I (Modern Actuarial Statistics I), and Exam MAS-II (Modern Actuarial Statistics II). These cover both the SOA and CAS preliminary exam tracks.

How much does ActuaryPractice cost?

ActuaryPractice offers three tiers. The Free tier includes 20 flashcards per exam and 2 mini exams per exam at no cost, with no credit card required. Full Access is $39.99 per month and unlocks all 1,400 flashcards, 210 mini exams, and 21 full-length simulations. Lifetime Access is a one-time payment of $299 for permanent access to all current and future content.

Can I try ActuaryPractice before paying?

Yes. Every new account gets free access to 20 flashcards per exam and 2 complete mini exams per exam. No credit card is required to sign up. This gives you enough material to evaluate the quality and style of our questions before upgrading.

Are the practice questions original?

Yes. Every question on ActuaryPractice is original content written specifically for our platform. We do not repackage publicly available problems or use generic question banks. Each question is crafted to match the style, difficulty, and topic distribution of actual SOA and CAS exams.

How many practice questions are available?

ActuaryPractice includes over 8,400 practice questions across all seven exams. For each exam, there are 200 flashcards, 30 mini exams with 30 questions each (900 exam questions), and 3 full-length simulations. Every question includes a detailed explanation covering both the correct approach and why each wrong answer is incorrect.

What is the difference between mini exams and full-length simulations?

Mini exams contain 30 questions and are designed for focused practice sessions, typically taking 45 to 60 minutes. Full-length simulations mirror the actual exam format with the same number of questions, time limits, and difficulty distribution you will encounter on exam day. Mini exams are ideal for daily study, while full-length simulations are best for final exam preparation.

Which actuarial exam should I take first?

Most candidates start with either Exam P (Probability) or Exam FM (Financial Mathematics). Exam P is a strong choice if you have a solid background in calculus and probability. Exam FM is often recommended if you are more comfortable with financial math and interest theory. Both exams are prerequisites for the later exams, so you will need to pass them regardless of your chosen path.

How long should I study for an actuarial exam?

Study time varies by exam and individual background. As a general guideline, candidates typically study 250 to 400 hours for early exams (P and FM) and 350 to 500 hours for later exams (STAM, LTAM, MAS-I, MAS-II). Most candidates spread their study over 3 to 6 months. Our study schedule builder can help you create a personalized study plan based on your target exam date.

What is the pass rate for actuarial exams?

Pass rates for preliminary actuarial exams typically range from 40% to 55%, depending on the exam and sitting. Exam FM tends to have the highest pass rate among the early exams, while MAS-I and LTAM tend to have lower pass rates. See our detailed pass rate data for historical trends by exam.

Can I use ActuaryPractice on my phone or tablet?

Yes. ActuaryPractice is a web application that works on any device with a modern browser. The interface is fully responsive, so you can study on your phone, tablet, or computer. No app download is required.

Do you cover both SOA and CAS exams?

Yes. Our platform covers all preliminary exams for both the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). Exams P, FM, and SRM are shared between both organizations. Exam STAM and LTAM are SOA-specific, while MAS-I and MAS-II are CAS-specific. See our SOA vs CAS comparison guide for help choosing your path.
